Let’s start by understanding what AKS is. Azure has been a game changer for Microsoft, and Azure Kubernetes Service simplifies the deployment of a managed Kubernetes cluster in Azure by offloading most of the complexity and operational overhead to Azure.
Azure manages the master node, and all we have to do is manage and maintain the agent node. So as a managed Kubernetes service, AKS is basically free. Hence the popularity.
So what is Kubernetes?
Kubernetes is open source software that allows you to deploy and manage containerized applications at scale. And, containerization is defined as a form of operating system virtualization, through which applications are run in isolated user spaces called containers, all using the same shared operating system (OS). So a container is essentially a fully packaged and portable computing environment.
Now that we’ve understood was Kubernetes is, let’s see why it’s called a microservice. Microservices are also known as the microservice architecture, is an architectural style that structures an application as a collection of services that are easy to maintain and test, loosely coupled, independently deployable and organized around business capabilities.
